Shalom!

As we look toward Chanukah, a celebration of light and miracles, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible stories of light in our own community. Chanukah reminds us that every person carries a light and a story. And when we share that light, we create miracles for one another.

Take Tara’s story, for example. She came to Chabad during one of the darkest times in her life, feeling overwhelmed and alone. Through your support, she and her daughter, Evea, found more than just a community—they found a family. Seeing Evea’s joy and connection during Shabbat dinners and at Camp Gan Israel brought light into their lives when they needed it most.

Then there’s Deborah, who reconnected with her Jewish roots after experiencing the warmth and sincerity of our community. What started with a simple mezuzah on her door became a profound rediscovery of Judaism as something alive, tangible, and deeply meaningful.

These stories aren’t just moments—they’re miracles that happen because of you. Your generosity ensures that Chabad is a place where people can find connection, hope, and belonging, even during their toughest times.

This Chanukah, as we light the menorah, let’s remember the power of our collective light. Together, we’re not just keeping the flame of Judaism alive—we’re helping it shine even brighter.

YOU ARE MY LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS, by Tara Sudol

When I first met Chabad of Novato, I was in one of the darkest times of my life. I was going through a divorce, navigating life as a single mom, and feeling completely alone. I hadn't worked in six months, and I was struggling to find my footing. The weight of it all was overwhelming. That's when you stepped in and became a light for me and my daughter, Evea.

I'll never forget how welcoming the Landas were from the very start. They opened their home to us and gave us a place to celebrate Shabbat. That simple act of kindness gave me a sense of belonging when I felt like I had nowhere to turn. It wasn't just a meal or a gathering-it was a reminder that we weren't alone, that there was a community ready to embrace us.

For Evea, the Chabad community became a source of pure joy. Seeing her happiness during such a tough time brought me so much comfort. She absolutely loves being at Chabad-so much so that she chooses it over soccer or anything else. Watching her thrive in a space where she feels so connected and loved was everything I needed during those challenging days.

This generosity extended even further when it came to Camp Gan Israel. I couldn't afford camp at the time, but they made it possible for Evea to attend. I can't even express how much that meant to me. Every day she came home glowing, excited to go back. It gave her an outlet for joy and connection that I simply couldn't have provided on my own.

This community welcomed me with open arms, no judgment, and no pressure. They made me feel like I was enough just as I was, and that has made all the difference.

Evea's bond within the community has been especially touching. My mom, Arlene, often says, "She needs this like a plant needs water." Evea is such a spiritual little girl, full of deep questions, and Chabad has given her a space to grow and thrive. From baking challah to celebrating holidays, every experience has brought her joy and meaning.

Looking back, I can honestly say that this community has been a lifeline for us. During one of the hardest times in my life, they gave us not just support but hope. They've brought so much happiness into Evea's life, and for that, I'll always be grateful. Thank you from the bottom of my heart you've changed our lives in ways I'll never forget.

YOU TRANSFORMED MY CONNECTION TO JUDAISM, by Deborah B.

When I walked into my friend's shiva for her grandson, I didn't expect it to change my life. I was there to support a friend, but what I found was something far more profound. Rabbi Landa led the shiva with such kindness and sincerity that it moved me to tears. I had never experienced someone with so much authenticity and warmth and he went out of his way to reach out to me afterward. That simple act of care opened my heart in a way I hadn't experienced before.

At that shiva, Rabbi Landa asked if I had a mezuzah on my door. When I said no, he immediately offered to come to my house and put one up. And he did. That small gesture wasn't just about a mezuzah-it was about showing me that Judaism could be something alive, tangible, and deeply meaningful.
Chabad has transformed the way I see Judaism.

It's not just a set of rituals or rules; it's about love, people, community, and actions that embody those values. Every time I'm at Chabad, whether for a service, a holiday celebration, or just a conversation, I feel something healing deep within me. Rabbi Landa's sermons, the warmth of the community, the way the Landas live their lives-it's all so profoundly moving.

It's your support that allows Chabad to be this safe, nurturing place for people like me.

It's your support that makes it possible for a rabbi to reach out to a grieving community member and change the trajectory of her life.

And it's your support that ensures Judaism not only survives but thrives in the face of rising anti-semitism and assimilation.

For me, Chabad has been a lifeline. It has brought joy, healing, and purpose back into my life. Your generosity made that possible. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Know that your support touches lives in ways you may never fully see but will always be felt.

The holiday of Chanukah is coming up, and for us that conjures up the image of light. YOU are a light. You keep the flames burning in the individuals whose stories you'll read in these pages.

Thank YOU for the impact you have had, and continue to have, on people from all backgrounds and walks of life who call our Jewish community their family.

There is nothing like belonging, like feeling you’re “at home,” and that’s exactly what you have created for so many.

YOU gave me a place, by Stew Reubens

I grew up in England in a very populated Jewish community, but living in Marin I couldn’t quite find my place.

One day, I was hiking and all of a sudden I see this Rabbi hiking with his kids and we strike up a conversation. It was the first I knew of Chabad in Novato, and now I found my place.

When my dad died, it was a defining moment for me. Rabbi Landa arranged for a meal to be sent to me and my family in England, and that completely touched me. Since then, I’ve slowly been incorporating more Judaism on my own. I celebrate Shabbat. I pray daily. I put on tefillin daily. Since becoming a part of the community, I’m self-driven to learn and grow. I want to increase my knowledge.

Everybody from the community who I’ve met are just wonderful people. Rabbi Landa really embodies the joyfulness of a Chassidic lifestyle. Seeing him and the Camp Gan Israel campers and counselors in the Novato July 4th Parade, displaying their Jewish pride really made an impression on me. By Rabbi Landa’s example, people can be more comfortable in who they are and not be afraid to show it.

I’m excited to see more and more growth within the community.

YOU are our anchor, by Avrutzky Family - Harel, Raya, Beeri, and Carmi

Our son Beeri was born with Cerebral Palsy. We’re from Israel, but the best surgeons and therapies are in the USA, and that’s what brought us to Marin. Multiple people urged us to connect with the Landas and Chabad of Novato and we are so grateful we did.

With all the therapies we have to do for Beeri, and the traveling that all of that entails, we feel like the Novato Jewish Community is our anchor. It’s solid ground, because we’re jumping around so much.

What this entire journey taught us is that the saying ‘Am Yisrael Chai’ - ‘The Jewish people are alive’ is SO real for us,” says Raya, Beeri’s mother. “If you’re Jewish and you go to a town from a foreign country, you automatically have community. We get to see this so clearly.”

“It’s so easy for us to feel at home here and like we have family here,” continues Harel, Beeri’s father. “We’re so grateful we found you. To me it’s just love, open hearts, magnetic people, amazing energy.”

“My favorite thing about coming to Chabad is seeing friends, and playing with Hadassa and Chaya Landa,” chimes in Carmi, Beeri’s sister.

“And I love Camp Gan Israel and Hebrew School,” adds Beeri, “and playing with Yossi and Levi.”

Raya nods. “The biggest impact for the kids was camp. And now they have Hebrew School. Beeri's Cerebral Palsy was never a barrier to him joining. It was the opposite. Everyone included him and watched out for him. He made life-long friends from these opportunities.

“As an Israeli, I thought Chabad was for exotic places like Nepal and India. When you travel, you get Chabad. But what I realized seeing you here, is that it’s equally important to go to a place like Novato where there is no local Judaism. You create it for the people here. Last Sukkot, Rabbi Menachem invited others to share a Sukkot memory. Someone said, ‘my first sukkah experience was when you guys came 9 years ago.’ I realized how amazing it is what you are doing - you bring Judaism to people who have no idea what Purim and Sukkot even are.”

“Supporting Chabad of Novato is so important, because then they can reach more people and do more good. Like they’ve done for us,” Raya concludes.

You gave me a taste of home, by Max Tartour

Five years ago, I was in front of the Dollar Store across from Safeway. I saw this Rabbi in a white van with his two sons and I was incredulous. I said, “I can’t believe this! There is a religious person here?” I had no idea Chabad was in Novato.

I grew up in Paris with lots of warm and fond memories of my Judaism and Jewish connection. But ever since I came to Marin, my connection faded away. I didn't have ANY connection other than when I called my mom. Nothing felt right to me. But when I met the Rabbi, he said to me, “Max, you have a neshama (a Jewish soul). You have an inner flame and it’s burning. It will never be extinguished.”

My flame grew very fast. It’s continuing to burn. Now I go every week to the synagogue, and I look forward to it so much. I love all the people there.

Rebbetzin Adina Landa makes a cholent that reminds me of my youth and my mother’s dish, dafina. It’s a 200-year-old recipe and it’s part of our tradition.

Rabbi Landa completely changed my life. I want to be around him. I want to pray with him. Every word he says impacts me. There’s not many people like him on this earth. I’ve met many Rabbis, but none equal his pure love, his warmth, and his joy for Torah.

All my growth came from me. No one is saying “you have to go to synagogue.” I go because I love it. I love the community. I love the people. I love being a part of it.

WHAT A YEAR it has been so far!

Dear friend,

Do you know what G-d's first words were in the process of creation? Our entire raison d'etre was contained in that opening speech in the Torah. "Let there be light."

Those words are G-d's Divine Mission statement to us.

Our purpose in this world is to bring light to others and the world, making the world a better and brighter place. Each act of goodness and kindness reveals another glimmer of that light.

Your friendship and support has brought much-needed light to a world that, at times, seems dark and confused. Thank you for bringing light and joy. You are a lamplighter.

May you and your family always experience the light of the Almighty and His blessings in all aspects of your life. Below are some individual stories that highlight our youth and the impact you make on our future generation!

YOU welcomed me in, b y Evan Coxon

Hi, my name is Evan and I'm 11. I started Hebrew School just last November and I’ve never done this before. You have welcomed me and my sisters into the community and I am very thankful. I now love celebrating the holidays, sitting in the community sukkah, and singing Dayenu on Passover. I even got to recite the Ma Nishtana in front of 90 people at the community Seder.

What I love most about coming to Chabad of Novato is that you teach any level of Jews -those who are very educated and those who know nothing about Judaism. Before Hebrew School, I barely knew anything about Judaism, but now I’ve learned so many things, like about the Holy Temple -the Beit Hamikdash, and its importance in Judaism. I think Jewish education is important for all Jewish kids across the globe because it is important to learn and understand your heritage at a young age so you can teach your kids.

YOU filled a void, by German Pinkhasov

I grew up in Dagestan, along the Caspian Sea. Growing up, we knew we were Jewish, but couldn't celebrate Judaism out in the open. As a family we moved to Marin in 2003. We all know this is a beautiful place, very warm, very scenic. But we knew we were missing something. Our hearts weren’t fully filled. There was an empty spot in our hearts. And all of a sudden a magical thing happened in Marin and for our family. We got introduced to the Landa family. When their family came into our lives, we started to feel a sense of community, love, and education.

Since then, we celebrate Shabbat, we always look forward to the holidays and we even have gatherings for young dads.

My two daughters started asking questions. “Papa, are we Jewish?” “Is G-d everywhere?” “Are all our friends Jewish?”

You can’t just answer questions like these so quickly. You have to think about it, think about your roots and explain to your kids that for thousands of years we as Jewish people were living in one place, then moved from Israel to other places until eventually we landed in Marin County. And now we get this sense of community where our hearts are filled.

Hebrew School has been the most amazing experience for my children, I know that for a fact. They look forward to Sunday because they know they’re coming to something that they don’t experience throughout the whole week.

These two hours can be replaced with so many other activities- sports, learning languages, all types of different educational experiences. BUT you cannot just buy family and community that you love spending time with where you belong.

It’s unpurchasable.

Some people live their whole life missing it. We get to live our lives having it. The home really comes from a mother and so I want to give a huge thanks to Adina, the sense of this community circle comes from her. She creates the structure so that our heritage can be passed on to the next generation. I wish this community a lot of happiness and may all of our dreams come true together.

A mother and daughter's experience , by Rose Viggiano and Ori

Growing up, I was forced to go to Hebrew School because that was the only way I could have a Bat Mitzvah. I hated going. It was actual school where you sat at desks and learned with a teacher standing at the board. The other kids were already friends from school so I wasn’t included. I hung out by myself.

When I had my Bat Mitzvah, I didn’t learn anything about WHY I was having a Bat MItzvah. I wasn’t emotionally connected to it. It didn’t make sense to me.

There was no significance other than you're having a big party and this is something you had to do as a Jew. My impression of Judaism when I was done with Hebrew School is that it’s a place you feel excluded and it’s very dogmatic. It was a place to just learn prayers and Hebrew with no meaning or spiritual connection to G-d.

When I moved to Novato in my mid 30s, with my little baby girl, Ori, I met the Landa family.

I always felt like the Landas were such wonderful people and that’s what kept me open to Ori going to Hebrew School. What I like is that she’s having fun while she’s learning in a joyous atmosphere. And there’s community and other kids. There’s a nice mixture of people across the Jewish spectrum and it’s an accepting open environment.

“That’s why I have been here for 6 years,” Ori says.

I like that she is learning how to connect to G-d. That’s important. She is getting this foundation that G-d is here, all the time, you’re never alone, you have access to G-d at any moment. That’s what I was missing.

When I ask other friends of hers that go to other Hebrew Schools about their experience, their answer is, “Ugh I hate it.” It makes me sad, and I’m so thrilled for Ori that she has such a positive experience.

“You don’t just make us recite facts, you teach it in a fun way. Like when we do scavenger hunts -we learn stuff along the way but it’s fun to learn. And then the learning sticks with me more because I enjoyed it. The kids are really nice and I have friends,” says Ori.

We also LOVE the Family Shabbat events in the Landa home. It really builds community. It’s so nice for the kids to make challah, light candles, and be together in a relaxed environment, and just play. And because we’re in the Hebrew School, whenever we come to other events, we feel like we’re part of the core community which is the opposite of what I experienced growing up.

I love that it’s such an intimate connection and you get individual attention. Rabbi Landa and Adina are really accessible if I wanted to talk about something or meet up for coffee.

Sometimes synagogue memberships are $5000 and seats are $750, which would make it inaccessible for me. I never felt like Chabad was inaccessible, because you’re truly there to bring everyone in with love and attention. At Chabad of Novato, we give what we can. Some can give more, some can give less, but it comes from the heart.

YOU are educating the next generation

Now more than ever we need to empower and educate young Jewish children. The robust educational programming you provide is changing lives. Hands on learning that has impact for years to come.

Having grown up in Novato, I didn't have a Jewish community or summer camp to go to. It is especially moving to send my children to Camp Gan Israel in Novato.

My 8 and 12 year old children loved the activities, the educational fun and the experience they gained by hearing music, learning about reptiles, working on art projects while incorporating Hebrew and Judaism. The counselors were wonderful as well! - Miriam Menkin

Dear friend,

You've heard of Moses. The great leader! The brilliant scholar. The miracle worker. Most notably, the man who brought the Torah from G-d to us, making us the Jewish People.

Fast forward to 2022. He was the conduit who made the lofty Torah accessible to each and every Jew. There are Jews in our community who can't make it to a Seder. Jews who have no way to access the Torah and its beauty.

You stepped up to be like Moses. You were the conduit to make Torah accessible to hundreds of Jews. Your gift helps them celebrate their holidays, connect to their faith, and learn inspiring messages. It is my wish, that just as Moses was blessed for his efforts, may G-d bless you with wisdom, wealth and good health.

YOU Bring the Light to Novato, by Reuven Aviv

My father, Shalom came from Casablanca, Morocco. He grew up with religion, and it only deepened wherever he went.

When he came to San Francisco, he became a leader in the synagogue there and kept his connection to Judaism strong.

Eventually, we had to move my father close to us (we live in Novato), to a nursing home. It was very different from what he was used to in terms of his Judaism, community and connections which he had in San Francisco.

I brought my father to the Landa Sukkah, which was the first time he met Rabbi Landa. He held the lulav and kissed the etrog. And then he told me, “This is a good Rabbi, you should stick with him. He’s a good man.”

The holidays were a special time with the community. Even when he was in a wheelchair and things were harder for him, Rabbi Landa would honor him with an aliya during the High Holidays and dance with him on Simchat Torah.

Rabbi Landa would go visit him and would send me pictures of the visits. It always lifted my father’s spirits (and mine).

Having Chabad of Novato here meant my father was still able to go to shul, to be connected. He always said, “No matter what, wherever you are, just go in to any shul and say a prayer.” - He didn’t care about divisions, about Ashkenazic vs. Sephardic vs. Chabad etc. He cared about celebrating Jewishly, and he instilled that in us as well.

I attend Chabad of Novato services every Shabbat and I bring along my father’s Siddur with me. For me personally, it’s fascinating to the way Rabbi Landa explains everything. It’s not preaching at all. He’s really open and accepting.

You bring the light to Novato.

YOU Brought Meaning and Joy, by Evelyn Joselowsky

My husband, Jeff, grew up very traditional in South Africa. His Judaism meant a lot to him. When we lived in Oxnard, he was part of the Chabad community for 11 years. When we relocated to Marin County, Rabbi Dov Muchnik (the Rabbi in Oxnard) introduced us to Rabbi Landa.

Jeff loved going to shul because it brought out his connection. He liked telling stories and being the center of attention. Jeff also loved Rabbi Landa. He had a deep connection with him.

Jeff and the Rabbi would speak every Friday, before Shabbat. In fact, my husband died suddenly, on a Friday afternoon. Rabbi Landa was the first one at the house after he passed to help with our grief and arrangements.

Before he died, he told the Rabbi exactly how he wanted to be buried - in the traditional way.

Having Chabad here gave Jeff a lot of spiritual comfort. It colored our life in a positive way.

He just enjoyed it so much; it was very meaningful to him.

And I’m so glad that he was able to have these meaningful and joyful experiences.

YOU Were her Connection, by Patricia Kaufmann

My mother called me one day and said, “Patricia, you have to meet this Rabbi! He’s wonderful. There’s so much love and light and they have the most wonderful family you would ever want to meet.” She would constantly urge me to connect more.

YOU were her connection. The Landa family meant the world to her. Literally. She loved their children. She loved the love and joy they carried. She loved their wisdom. She loved their connection to their faith. She loved how Adina and her husband raised them with strong family values. She loved how smart and intelligent and wise they were due to their upbringing.

It represented everything that she had growing up and had to move away from.

My mother, Mirelle (or Mimi for short), was born in North Africa during the pandemic in 1918. She came from a well-to-do family in Algeria, but due to wars and other tragedies, she suffered a lot and lost everything. She was forced to flee, leaving everything she had behind.

My mother is a true hero and never gave up.

Throughout all life’s hardships, her Judaism was an important part of her, and meant a lot to her. Despite all the confusion and pain she never walked away from her faith or from G-d. She emigrated to Israel, but eventually had to leave there as well. Her strong Jewish connection felt like an unlived dream for her, until she met the Landas and became part of the Novato Jewish Community.

The holidays with the community meant so much to her because of the joy, the love, and the unity that you brought together in novato. You really have transformed Novato and Marin county beautifully.

She would be so proud to know that due to your love, strength, faith and your continuity which is what she admired so much about you, that now you have a Center. The fact that people believed so much in you that you now have a Synagogue is truly special, and that’s what my mother was raised around.

For many years, my connection with a Jewish community was non-existent until I met Adina and Menachem. It brings me such joy when I can attend and I have the comfort of knowing I have a community supporting me. Every time I attend, I know that I am honoring my mother.

The effect Covid-19 has had on the elderly is still unknown. But what is certain is that when they have a visitor, it makes a world of a difference to them. It is like saving lives.

We are sending you this report to say thank you for caring and making an impact. Visits and check ins take place, even during the past 2 years . Thanks to you, the elderly do not feel isolated.

I want to encourage you to make an effort to be more available for the elderly. Think about what YOU can do to brighten their lives.

YOU Gave her connection, by David Rubinstein

My mom was originally from Providence, Rhode Island and grew up in an Orthodox family, mainly in Brooklyn, New York.

Imagine what it was like for her, then, to move out here to the Bay Area! She maintained her kosher household and deep religious beliefs, despite it being so different from her upbringing. She was living in the Deer Park Retirement Community.

One day, she starts telling me about this Rabbi she met, and how his wife was cooking kosher chicken for her each week and the Rabbi would deliver it.

I thought to myself: I’ve got to contact this Rabbi, and offer to pay for the chicken and deliver it myself.

And so began a connection that has lasted until today. I reached out to Rabbi Landa. He had met my mom, Mimmie, at one of his frequent visits to Deer Park where he would bring the joy of the holidays to the residents there. Whether it was Purim and he’d be reading the megillah, or Rosh Hashana and he’d come to blow the Shofar, you made sure that the Jewish residents of the Deer Park Community would not go overlooked.

There’s no question that this was a highlight in my mom’s religious experience.

It was a connection. A real connection. The kosher chicken was the pathway to her firmly re-establishing her connection with Judaism.

You care. And you show that.

YOU GIVE HER THE GIFT OF TIME, by Dawn Daniels

My mom, Dalia, was born and raised in a tumultuous time. It was 1940, in Palestine, as the State of Israel was being formed. The British were ruling, and things were very difficult.

Her parents, my grandparents, reluctantly left the Warsaw Ghetto as they witnessed the rise of Hitler, and were devastated upon finding out that 37 close family members were murdered in the Holocaust. They arrived on the shores of Palestine to make a life for themselves there and begin anew.

At the age of 17, my mother flew to America and became a textile designer in Manhattan. She’s an amazingly creative woman, an artist, poet, painter, and writer.

She met my Dad, got married and moved to Texas (where my Dad was originally from). Here was my mom, a young Israeli firebrand, living in Austin, Texas, raising me. She felt quite alone, Jewish-wise.

She’s a warrior. She got two master degrees, and a PhD in linguistics. When my parents got divorced, despite her fear of how she would make it, my mom persevered and made it through.

When my mom developed dementia in 2016, I brought her over to Northern California where I was living.

I am so grateful that Rabbi Landa and Adina go to visit her. They tell me that they gain more from being with her than she gains from them. I’m sure it’s mutual. They tell me that anytime Adina or Rabbi Landa (or one of the kids!) would sing the Shema or the Modeh Ani, my mom, Dalia, would sing along. It’s amazing how deep our Judaism runs.

My mom’s strong Jewish roots and strong Jewish connection is rekindled every time they visit. The Rabbi’s enthusiasm and love for my mom is such an inspiring and beautiful light.

My mom bought a burial plot in 1986 in the Mount of Olives. Because of her dementia, I actually had no clue about it. Menachem did some detective work and because of him I was able to find the plot, know what to do, and who to call when the time comes.

The gift of time is the biggest gift you can give someone. You absolutely do just that. You give my mom the gift of time. Your time.

YOU Really Care, by Nina Sicangco, Hilda's Caregiver

You know what it’s like to see someone’s eyes and entire face light up? That’s what I get to witness each and every time Rabbi Landa, or Adina, or the Landa children, come to visit Hilda.

I am a caregiver, and I’ve been working with Holocaust survivor, 95 year old Hilda Namm for the past 3 years already.

She absolutely loves it when the Landas visit, especially the kids. I remember one time, the Landa kids were coming over to go swimming and Hilda was looking forward to it all day. She knew the littlest one loved oranges and made sure I bought some. She wanted me to get fruit and watermelon, and make sure it was cold. Her anticipation was contagious and so fun to watch.

But it’s not just about visiting. I notice that there are people who just come to visit because they are wanting something from her. But when Rabbi Landa or Adina visit, Hilda is just at ease. She feels like these are actually people who care about me. Who want to listen to me. Who value my opinion.

Rabbi Landa is constantly asking Hilda for her opinions and her advice. And she really appreciates that. She feels needed. And she feels truly valued by him. She stays up-to-date on his life and what he’s doing.

And the benefit lasts far beyond their visit. For the rest of the day, she’ll be all smiles. She’ll ask me what I think of the kids, and repeat anecdotes or stages of development that she sees in them. She really loves them.

At this point, Hilda isn’t able to say that much. But just seeing the Landas makes a huge difference to her.

She also really enjoys Adina’s Challah Bread. In general, Hilda loves a variety of foods, but when it comes to Adina’s Challah, she can eat that all day.

I work with other elderly people, and I see how essential phone calls and visits are for them. They are often alone and lonely, craving connection, conversation, and being needed. Especially with the pandemic, they feel even more isolated than pre-pandemic.

Elderly people need people the most. They feel lonely when they don’t get to see or hear from others, especially others that they care about. I really admire Hilda’s daughter and son for how often they call and visit. Hilda is extremely social and loves phone calls and visits. Chabad really does that for her.

I get to see first-hand the huge difference it makes in Hilda’s life. Thank you.

YOU Reached Our Kids, by Valerie Testa

I grew up with a strict version of Judaism. I felt like it was forced upon me, and so I rebelled and turned the other way. I wanted nothing to do with the Judaism I was raised with.

I married Gary, a wonderful man, who isn’t Jewish. The synagogue that my father founded turned him away.

All of that changed when I met Chabad of Novato and the Landas.

Rabbi Landa actually thanked Gary for letting me raise our kids as Jews.

That first phone call I got from Rabbi Landa, where he introduced himself and said “I’m the new Rabbi in Novato '' automatically flooded me with relief. It’s hard to describe the feeling exactly. I had this feeling of: you’re always there. You’re always close by. It’s the feeling of being at home. Of safety. I felt like my family was here.

You make me want to do more and get more involved in my Jewish traditions.

You’ve reached our kids. They adore Rabbi Menachem and Adina and that’s a big deal. My daughter Bella loves being with you both and volunteering in Hebrew School. I didn’t have to force her. She LOVES helping and coming because YOU are so welcoming and caring.

You enriched our lives. It's so important that people know that. Bring your kids. Let them have traditions and identity and know what Judaism is really all about. That’s exactly what you gave us.

YOU Gave Me Comfort, by Jill Shamash

I walked into a crowded room of women. It was a Jewish Women’s Circle at Chabad, an evening of painting mezuzah cases, socializing, and learning the significance behind this important Jewish mitzvah.

I was coming to support my friend who was leading the activity. I was also coming to meet Adina, the mother of a sweet girl my son met at preschool.

Little did I know it would be the beginning of deep friendships and connections, and the feeling of lifelong belonging.

Shortly after the women’s evening, Rabbi Landa personally came over to affix the mezuzah case and scroll to our front door. Although we have moved since then, that mezuzah is still proudly displayed on our front doorpost.

I instantly felt a strong sense of community.

When it came time for the summer, I had to choose which camp to send my 4 year old son to. There were different options, even different Jewish options, but I chose Camp Gan Israel because I felt in my heart that he was going to build confidence, find life long lasting friendships, and have personal growth there, as well as have a ton of fun.

My son had fun every single day. He came home talking about new friends that he had met. The experience was above average. It was truly everything I was hoping for. And next year, I plan on sending him again.

You have a warm community that I now feel a part of, and embraced us with open doors and open hearts.

But the most powerful thing for me is just knowing that I have connections like this in my life.

I have a Rabbi and Rebbetzin I could turn to with anything I need, no matter where I am in the world. Just knowing that gives me so much comfort.

I had a baby during the pandemic and Rabbi Landa came over right after my daughter was born, and helped us say some special blessings and prayers to welcome our baby girl into the world. We were so grateful to have somebody, especially someone of his caliber and presence, come check in on us.

Thank you for ensuring that community, connection, open warmth, love, and acceptance are available to us all.

You Ignited Me, by Ya Ya

Before I met Chabad of Novato, I was a Tibetan Buddhist for over 20 years, I called myself a “JewBu.”

My t eacher passed away and there wasn’t a substitute for me. My own spiritual practice wasn’t strong enough to keep me going.

It faded.

I was in a period of fading down, and I didn’t know how to energize my spirituality.

I happened upon the Chabad Jewish Center of Novato and the sign above the door caught my eye. It was perky, spring-like, cheerful and modern. Right away, I thought there’s something here.

That’s what YOU have done for me. You gave me back my spirituality ... but even more than that, you brought me back to my core identity.

I came to hear Holocaust Survivor - Sami Steigman - share his story and was struck by his positivity.

I met another local woman, Shirah, who was so warm and welcoming and went the extra 9 yards for me. She also invited me for a Shabbat dinner with her.

I remember her saying to me, “This is a Rabbi who really cares.” She was impressed by his depth of concern for all human beings.

I went from curiosity to being embraced and included. Despite having no money, Adina warmly included me and didn’t let that interfere.

My life has been impacted very positively in every way possible since the day I reached out, but one moment stands out in particular.

By the Purim Megillah reading, the Rabbi announced that this is an auspicious time to give to someone in need. And then it hit - I am in need. I worked up the courage to say to Adina, “I could use some help.” Her response, “No worries, I’ll be right back.” She came back with a wad of bills and handed it to me. I was moved to tears.

From the first moment, I felt belonging.

Not only that, I was able to give back and feel needed. I asked the Rabbi what I can do to help and he said, “Can you go to Sacramento and pic up 800 boxes of matzah?” I said yes right away and then he said, “Can you deliver them?” and I said yes.

Thus began some moments of connection that I will never forget. I had the opportunity to connect to so many individuals that the
Landas are already connected to.

From when I rang the doorbell, I was showered with love from so many people. Many people were alone, and getting this warm gift and being able to share a little of their stories was so uplifting for both them and me.

Your generosity and inclusion has touched me the most. I was raised Reform. I can’t read Hebrew, and I remember Rabbi Landa
saying, “That doesn’t matter. You’re here now.” He was very receptive to hearing my needs. I felt ignited by the Rabbi’s joy.

I used to think of Chabad as some 18th century cult. Now, I see how the Rabbi and his family live and practice, with acceptance and joy, and I have only respect. I am so proud to be Jewish and to be a part of it. Drop your pretenses of what you think Chabad is and just go there.

Just join in. I’m glad I did. Thank you.

Back in 2012 when the Landas first moved to Novato, there was an article in the Novato Advance. I sent Menachem a note welcoming him. We met at Dr. Insomniacs and the rest is history. I’ve been a friend and supporter ever since.

I’ve had different phases and chapters where Chabad has really impacted me. When my deaf mom, may she rest in peace, was alive, the rabbi was very kind to her and took her under his wing. She loved seeing him, being a part of the Chanukah party at Whole Foods, and experiencing the joy of Judaism. When my wife, Bette, may she rest in peace, got sick, the Landas were there for us in every way. My kids were very fearful about what was to happen and Menachem came over a couple times and just sat with us.

That was by far the worst time in our lives. The warmth of having you help us through that excruciatingly difficult time was an
incredible gift. You lessened our pain.

And then just on a day to day basis, Chabad has really impacted me. I wasn’t praying daily and now I do. It’s become a cornerstone in my life. I'm a smorgasbord Jew and you have been very helpful for my own personal and spiritual growth. When you’re raising a family sometimes religion gets pushed to the back burner ... but when your kids leave and your life slows down you start to reflect and wonder what it's all about. Chabad has been so helpful to me for that. I'm now far more committed than I ever was and I identify with my heritage so much more.

Your approach is non-judgmental. Menachem will call me up and say can you come in for a minyan and I’ll say I'm busy, I have a commitment. I don't feel like I'm being judged. That is huge to me. So many people are so judgmental; if it’s not their way they think they’re more pious, and I don’t like that. Here, I can show up and wear my hiking clothes and no one is going to judge me. I love the fact that it's so warm, and lively. I’ve made some pretty good friends through Chabad. I love going to classes and seeing the same people and saying hello.

I could see our new center as a hub for Jewish life and a focal point for Jews all around the Bay Area.

You have a warm and welcoming environment. You offer something for everybody - senior, kids, young adults. The fact that you have created a real sense of community that didn’t exist in Novato, amazes me. Novato really needed a Jewish community and having Chabad here has been far more enriching for me than any other Jewish experience I’ve had.

YOU CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER

One spring night, 8 years ago, a rabbi with a black jacket and beard rang my doorbell. I refused to let him in, and he offered to talk through the screen door.

We talked for a long time and then I finally let him in. He gave me matza for Passover. He introduced himself as Rabbi Menachem Landa, the new Rabbi to town.

And thus began a friendship and an introduction to a community that has forever changed my life.

I joined for prayer services, only because I wanted to be near such wonderful people.

For the first time, I really felt like I belonged.

I got to know everybody because I was a part of it from the beginning when it was still small, and I am amazed at how the community has grown into a beautiful oasis of friendship and kindness. You gave me community.

The Friday night Shabbat dinners were the highlight of my life. They were open to people with diverse ideas and discussion. Menachem’s teachings opened up my life as a Jew. I’ve always been proud to be Jewish but you opened up my Jewish heart.

I lived in Novato for over 20 years and I didn't even know there was another Jew in Novato.

I was frustrated spiritually and since I’ve been with Chabad, I’ve been comfortable spiritually.

You are a lamplighter.

It’s the first time in my life that I’ve seen that kind of all-encompassing non-judgmental love. To me that’s Chabad in a nutshell.

I am going through the hardest time of my life right now. I feel alone, and without family or support. Some days were so dark for me that I didn’t even know if I could survive it.

And then you showed up. You were there for me. You gave me a home to come to, with the best Friday night dinners. You gave me family by letting me be a part of yours.

Your joy and excitement for life is infectious.

YOU GAVE ME A HOME

“Home is where the heart is” may be true in songs, but in reality we have one heart and multiple homes. For me and many others, Chabad of Novato is our second home.

I moved to Novato in 2018, just myself, with no family around. I googled Jewish events and found out about the Annual Chabad public menorah lighting, coordinated by the Landas, just around the corner from where I was living. I met the Landas, among the hundreds of other participants there, and then attended a Chanukah-themed women’s event the following night.

I was so warmly welcomed and immediately felt at home.

You gave me my place.

You provided community, friendship, and the warmth of your home.

I know I can come whenever I feel alone. You are like my family here.

You gave me community and connections that I otherwise would have never had. Just your presence here gives me comfort.

Not Alone. You Were There For Me

Have you ever had an experience where exactly what you needed most came into your life at exactly the right moment? I just had that experience.

I live alone. I am elderly. I have health issues that made the current pandemic extremely difficult for me to handle. My finances have been hit very hard. My phone was turned off because I couldn't pay my bills.

Last week, I received a knock on my door. Rabbi Landa was standing there with a big smile beneath his blue mask. He had been trying to reach me but since my phone was off, he came in person to visit. He handed me a $400 check to help me with my current bill.

It's hard to put into words how grateful I feel. Yes, for this incredible gesture of generosity and caring. But even more, just knowing that there's a Jewish community right here, with loving leaders, that care about me. Life is less lonely and less challenging just knowing that.

Is it Happenstance or is it Hashem?

In November of 2014, my dear father, OBM, returned home from a long stay in a rehabilitation center in Marin County. He was still almost inconsolable after the loss of his beloved life partner (my mom, OBM) 8 months before. After getting him settled I set about the task of looking through his mail. Only bills and one large postcard requesting we all join the Chabad Family of Novato for the “Grand Menorah Lighting”. My first thought was, “There are Jews in Novato”? My second thought was, “Why did the caregivers not throw out this postcard that could easily have been mistaken for an advert?”. Hmmmmmm.

I saved the postcard hoping to join the Chabad of Novato for the Menorah lighting, however, unfortunately could not. Little over a week later my father lapsed into what could only be described as a self-induced coma. My son, who had taken care of his Grandparents and managed their caregivers for well over 2 years told me, “Mom, we have done everything we can for Grandpa physically but he and all of us need to speak to someone spiritually.” Both my children are grown adults so I knew if my son was asking for this support it was seriously needed.

I remembered the postcard and immediately wrote an email to Rabbi Landa (whom I did not know at that time) appraising him of our situation. He wrote back within 30 minutes and said he would be happy to come over to see my Father and speak with my children and I. He was at my Father’s home in Novato within the hour – we were all there. I remember this day well, most particularly the comfort I received simply listening to the Rabbi praying over my Father’s bedside and speaking with my children for over an hour. Rabbi Landa, or Menachem as we call him now, did not rush through his time with us, he was patient and reassuring with my children and myself. Before leaving, he asked if my son wanted to lay tefillin (something my son had never done before). My son said yes and he and Rabbi Menachem went outside. I thought for sure my son would be overwhelmed laying tefillin, however, when he returned to the house he said he loved the experience and that the Rabbi had explained everything to him putting the act of laying tefillin in context for him.

My dear Father passed a mere week after the Rabbi’s visit. I asked Rabbi (Menachem) Landa to conduct the service to bury my Father which he agreed to do. If it can be said a funeral service was lovely - my Father’s service was indeed lovely - made so by our dear Rabbi Landa. He came to my house for Shiva and upon learning I didn’t know 10 Jewish men in the Bay Area for a minyan, he put the word out to the Chabad family and within 30 minutes we had our minyan.

He comforted us all during the period of Shiva and has been my and my family’s comfort ever since. I often wonder if finding his postcard inviting us to the Grand Menorah lightning was happenstance or perhaps did HaShem have something to do with bringing Rabbi Landa into our lives at the exact moment when his spiritual guidance was most needed.

From that day forward I have enjoyed celebrating Shabbat, the Jewish holidays, lectures, classes, films, events etc with the Rabbi, the Rebbetzin, their family and members of the Chabad of Novato home. They have truly brought a sense of Jewish yiddishkeit to the Bay area – accepting everyone into the Chabad family, no matter how they practice, or don’t practice, Judaism. Together Menachem and Adina Landa and their children have a life pattern that supports Tikum Olum and we are blessed to have them in Bay Area as our emissaries.

I recently moved to Morganville, New Jersey from Marin County. As the Passover Seder was approaching, I had nothing for it and no one to celebrate with due to Covid-19, despite having family nearby. Rabbi Landa emailed me, asking how I was doing and if I needed anything for the Seder. I couldn’t believe it!

I responded with my situation, and within a few hours, he had arranged for all my Seder needs to be dropped of at my doorstep, shortly before the holiday. I was beyond touched. It felt like a miracle. I was completely uplifted during these difficult and lonely times.

Every Chabad Rebbetzin I’ve ever met has been super strong, an amazing leader, confident, knowledgeable and completely supported by her husband.

In my adult life every time I moved to a new place ( I’ve moved around and traveled a lot in my life) I always wanted to look for a Chabad community or live near a synagogue.

I love how learned Chabad Rabbis & Rebbetzins are and the level of knowledge and amazing conversations at farbrengens is a favorite thing for me.

I definitely feel a strong connection with the community, Rabbi Landa & Adina & I adore their kids. So that’s also a huge reason why I’m as involved with Chabad as I am.

On the front cover, you’ll see signs that children decorated, and we delivered to Novato Community Hospital, along with dozens of Kosher Baked Goods, to thank all the medical workers for their dedication and devotion to ensuring the health and safety of our town.

In addition, pictured here, you’ll find lawn signs that we had printed, and distributed free of charge, to spread this powerful message: Kindness, Patience, and Hope are also Highly Contagious. Don’t wait to catch it…. Be A Carrier!

Despite the world changing so rapidly, we jumped into action and delivered classes and lectures online, Virtual Hebrew School, 150 Seder-to-Go-Kits, 60 Shavuot Packages, weekly Challah deliveries, and so much more. We received phone calls from the elderly asking for medication pick-up, grocery shopping, and the like … and of course arranged it all. Because that is our mission: to infect the world with love and kindness.

This past summer, I was traveling to Sunnyvale, and I mentioned it to Hilda, an elderly woman that we are close with.

I visit her frequently, and she considers my children her grand-children.

When Hilda heard that I was going to Sunnyvale, she said, “Can you visit my brother?” Of course, I was happy to do so.

I went to her brother, Paul’s, home, and together we put on tefillin. It was his first time putting on tefillin since his Bar Mitzvah in 1937!

On my next visit to Hilda, I showed her the picture of me with her brother putting on tefillin.

She was peering at it closely, and asking how he looked. I said, “Hilda, he’s your brother! You know how he looks.” She responded, “I haven’t seen him in 5 years. Neither of us could drive.”

Needless to say, I was astounded. I couldn’t imagine two siblings living 2 hours away from each other and not seeing each other in 5 years! I offered to bring Hilda to visit her brother Paul in Sunnyvale.

Two weeks later, I took a day to drive Hilda to Sunnyvale (and back). I can’t describe the beauty of watching Hilda reunited with her brother for the first time in 5 years. They embraced, and spent a good few hours catching up and enjoying each other’s company.

It’s an honor and a privilege to be in my position, serving the local community in any way I can -physically, spiritually, emotionally.

Each and every one of our supporters is an equal partner and shares this Mitzvah. We can only do it together.

When we moved to Novato we had no idea our lives would be enriched with the warmth of Judaism. All year my kids wait for the two weeks in the summer when they are surrounded by Jewish spirit! They love the counselors and the fun events and trips. The Landas make it possible with Camp Gan Izzy.

Every couple of months we go to Tot Shabbat at the Landa's house where our children make challah, listen to Jewish stories, sing Jewish songs and experience authentic Shabbat.
In addition, Chabad Hebrew School is a fun way they learn about Torah and Jewish holidays, among other things.

Bar Mitzvah preparation and Hebrew lessons with Rabbi Landa have been life changing for my son! By his 3rd lesson, my son said to me, “Mom, I think Rabbi Landa is changing my life!” He loves his lessons so much and truly looks forward to them every week!! We feel SO grateful we found Chabad Novato and Rabbi Landa!

I want to offer tremendous gratitude for our Novato Chabad Community! My husband, Richard and I now feel more anchored in spirituality given the leadership of Rabbi Menachem and Adina Landa. What the two have created here in Novato has now become vital to our sense of community and personal wellbeing and social connectedness.

The Landas have created a Jewish calendar of spiritual awareness by offering events and gatherings attuned to the annual and traditional rhythms of Jewish life. By entering into this rhythm of ongoing social occasions and education themes we’ve become increasingly and most positively identified as Jewish.

The Landas have now established a growing community where previously there was none nor any synagogue where we felt so at completely at home and welcomed.

This welcoming flows into a feeling of social togetherness reinforced by ongoing opportunities for Jewish education and participation.

At Chabad we and others surely feel accepted no matter the extent of Jewish backgrounds or knowledge of our ancient traditions. Clearly understood to each and all is that being a Jew is more significant than our current mastery of Torah or what we can recall from childhood.

The greater message from Rabbi Menachem and Adina is to come and learn, participate, celebrate, revere and most of all feel the tremendous dignity and deep spirituality of being a Jew.
